Where the Wild Things Are

The guys of C-Mon & Kypski (Simon Akkermans, Thomas Elbers, Daniel Rose en Jori Collignon) let their fantasies run free for half a year. After two years of intensive touring (from Amsterdam to Istanbul, South by Southwest to Eurosonic) with the material of the second album ‘Static Traveller’, it was time for something new. At the end of 2005 they decided to give their fantasy a helping hand. With unshaven beards they left with a camper van full of ideas and recording equipment to Morocco. Over a period of four weeks they created what is now their third and latest album ‘Where the wild things are’.

The most concrete product of their journey is the new single’ Bumpy Road’ (digital release:6 October) which retrieved it’s name from the circumstances of the recordings. It is by far the happiest C-Mon & Kypski song till now, and irresistibly invites it’s listener to explore the wide world yourself.

Adventure, freedom and fantasy are C-Mon & Kypskis magic words. The journey to Morocco is a good example as well as the album title, ‘Where the wild things are’, which is refers to the famous children book from 1963, written by Maurice Sendak with the same title. Little Max was sent to bed as a punishment and experiences all kind of adventures in the magic forest arising in his room.

No wonder the music of C&K does not have any musical borders. At first the group made it easy for themselves to be put under genre hiphop/turntablism, but does not count any more. C-Mon: “it really is a C-Mon & Kypski album, but some influences have decreased, some added. Especially rock plays a big part whereas we didn’t use guitars before. Most important, we don’t cut and paste anymore, we used less samples for this album and played a lot more instruments ourselves. We’ve grown in creating a sound.”

And so C-Mon & Kypski unite a whole lot of genres into their own sound, from afrobeat to electro, a psychedelic dreamtrack that is coverted to a pumping rocksong. Where do you find klezmer and tango seamless united into one song? Of course, C-Mon & Kypski.

Until now C-Mon & Kypski did every dirty job on the album themselves, but on their new album they thankfully make use of the services of rappers Sadat X (Brand Nubian, USA) Pete Philly en Kain (The Last Poets, USA) saxophone player Benjamin Herman (New Cool Collective) and from Amsterdam: Klezmer Band and the rockers of Voicst also collaborated on the album.

On Saturday night, Sept. 30, I went to the greatest party of my entire life. And I have been to some pretty wild parties in my day, people. But this one took the cake.

The event, dubbed "The Gathering," was a release party for the Michael Ninn-directed adult film Sacred Sin, which features two brand new instrumental songs by the great Eddie Van Halen. Janice Lee, 37, has also had her four CD players and speakers confiscated to ensure her neighbours can get a good night's sleep.

Roland Janes is not exactly a household name. In fact, only those who are deeply involved with rockabilly music will know who he is. To the latter, though, his is a name revered. It was Janes, along with Scotty Moore and Carl Perkins, who developed the rockabilly guitar style at Sun Records. Janes was born the second youngest in a family of seven in 1933 in a river town in North-East Arkansas called Brookings. It had once been an important lumber community and Roland's father, besides playing guitar, had earned a living as a lumberjack. By the time Janes was born, though, the lumber industry had died and his father had quit playing music. He did have an older brother who apparently played piano, organ and guitar and several of his cousins played fiddle, guitar, steel guitar, etc.. In fact, of the extended family, Janes was the last one to really start playing.

Just last week in this blog I noted how the music industry's deal with Gracenote for lyrics was also likely to lead to a campaign against Web sites that offer lyrics, chords and what's known as tabs -- diagrams that show how to play a guitar lick. And such a campaign would only be another foolhardy move by an industry that seems to have a tin ear for the Internet age.

Sure enough, if you go to the Guitar Tab Universe site -- popular among amateur musicians -- you're now greeted by a letter from site manager Rob Balch: "The company which owns this website has been indirectly threatened (via our ISP) with legal action by the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) as well as the Music Publishers' Association (MPA) on the basis that sharing tablature constitutes copyright infringement."

A pair of 20-year-old kids from Everett, Wash., who make up the band The Scene Aesthetic, are rock stars on the Web, and virtually unknown anywhere else.

"Internet is where we are," says vocalist Eric Bowley, who along with Andrew de Torres drew up a strategy for promoting their fledgling rock band on social-networking sites like News Corp.'s MySpace.com.

On that site alone, The Scene Aesthetic has had 2.3 million visitors and more than 124,000 "friends," code for people linked to their page. On PureVolume.com, a popular site where bands can post their music, fans have listened to their album "Building Homes from What We've Known" 1.3 million times. Over at YouTube.com, the music video of their first song, "Beauty in the Breakdown," has been watched over half a million times.

Kiss fans protest outside Rock Hall

About 200 Kiss fans protested in front of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to demand that the band be inducted into the hall.

Fans, some from as far away as California, carried signs Saturday and had painted their faces in black-and-white to resemble Kiss band members.

Those participating in the half-hour demonstration were upset that the band, formed more than 30 years ago, has not been admitted, even though it has been eligible since the late 1990s.

The second North American leg, which follows a run of European stadiums, will launch on Sept. 20 at Boston's Gillette Stadium. The dates will be sponsored by RadioShack.

Live 8 hero Bob Geldof has been forced to cancel two concerts in Italy because of lack of public interest, after only 45 people turned up to see him perform in Milan, Italy's La Stampa newspaper reported on Saturday.

Geldof walked out of Milan's 12 000-capacity Arena Civica on Friday without playing, given the paltry attendance. His manager explained that a concert for less than 400 people would not be viable, the newspaper said.

Nelly Furtado Scores First Chart-Topping Album

Bowing at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, Nelly Furtado's "Loose" is the sole album to sell more than 100,000 copies this week in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan. The Mosley Music/Geffen set shifted 219,000 units, earning Furtado her best single-week sales and her first No. 1 on the big chart.

The album's first single, "Promiscuous" featuring Timbaland, has been inescapable on radio and has peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Furtado's 2000 debut, "Whoa, Nelly!," peaked at No. 24, while her 2003 sophomore set, "Folklore," topped out at No. 38.

Former Culture Club frontman Boy George will fulfil court-ordered community service as a sanitation worker, a New York city spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

"He will be part of our team," sanitation spokesperson Keith Mellis told the Associated Press. "We won't know exactly what he will be doing for several weeks, though."

The singer, whose real name is George O'Dowd, pleaded guilty in March to falsely reporting a burglary at his Manhattan apartment, where arriving officers found cocaine.

Axl Rose Released From Stockholm Jail

Axl Rose spent most of the day in a Stockholm jail cell after allegedly biting a security guard in the leg at his hotel, police said. The Guns N' Roses frontman was arrested early this morning (June 27) after attacking and threatening the guard and causing damage to the Berns Hotel, where the alleged scuffle took place, police spokeswoman Towe Hagg said.

Rose was released from jail this evening, after he admitted to the charges and agreed to pay a fine of $5,500, Hagg said. The 44-year-old rocker was also ordered to pay $1,360 in damages to the security guard.

It's hard to approach any album that steals its title from an AC/DC song (especially if it's resurrected as a catch phrase in a recent Jack Black movie) very seriously. It's hard to approach a rap album that bases all of its tracks off of samples from classic '70s tunes without skepticism.

And yet, somehow, Deaf in the Family has made an album that should be rediculous, ridiculously good. The Brooklyn collective has actually integrated their samples and rhymes to expand the songs and enhance their statements.

I've had a few emails of late asking how I used to find the music for the Free Music Friday posts that I used to do. When I stopped doing them a while back I said I would reveal how I found the music but nobody ever asked/reminded me until recently so here goes.

There is no great secret to finding free music on the net all you have to do is use the search engines, links and details provided at the link.

Make sure that your anti-virus program is updated before you start as I can accept no responsibility for what you may find on your travels. That is one of the many reasons why I gave up doing the posts.

The Netherlands most famous open-air festival PINKPOP will take place for the 37th time in the city of Landgraaf at the beautiful festivalsite MEGALAND, 134 miles from Amsterdam, near the city of Heerlen and situated in the most South bound province of Limburg.

In 36 years the festival was sold out 16 times, with a capacity of 60.000 spectators. In 36 years more than 1,5 million people visited the festival and more than 500 acts played at the Pinkpop festival. See the History section.

This year´s program will be just as sensational as previous years on the Whitsun weekend, Saturday 3, Sunday 4 and Monday 5 of June.
